Editorial: Dialogue meetings and many irons in the fire

Dean Hanne Flinstad Harbo explains what is going on at the faculty during another hectic spring. The Dean regularly visits the various units and is very impressed by all the outstanding work, strong commitment and effort she has witnessed first-hand. New Norwegian knowledge archive (NVA) replaces Cristin

Dean of Research Jan Bj?lie, who sits on Sikt¡¯s portfolio board for research and knowledge resources, explains the transition that is taking place to the new Norwegian knowledge archive, which will go live in June.

Studies

Medical training at UiO Campus South among the most popular in the country

According to the Norwegian Universities and Colleges Admission Service, the application option ¡°UiO Campus South autumn¡± is the third most popular study programme per place of study. Applicant numbers are also excellent for the bachelor¡¯s degree in health management and health economics, with an increase of 22% and more first-choice applicants. International studies have faced a tougher admissions situation with the introduction of tuition fees, which has not unexpectedly resulted in lower applicant numbers for the international master¡¯s programmes. Read the full article on the Studies website.

New course for master¡¯s students in Europe

The Centre for Sustainable Healthcare Education (SHE) is hosting an exciting new Honours Certificate (one of five at UiO) for master¡¯s students. The certificate is being funded by Erasmus and goes into considerable depth regarding reflections on the relationship between sustainability and democracy across national borders. All subjects are taught at both UiO and the universities of Belgrade, Perugia, Agder and Paris Cite. Application deadline 1 July 2024.

Briefings

• Khrono: Elisabeth and UiO have collected over 400 computers for Ukrainian schoolchildren (link in Norwegian). Webmaster Elisabeth Kolflaath Semprini has, with the help of IT Manager Tor Henry Wold, both of Klinmed, and many others, helped UiO to keep education going in war-torn Ukraine.

• The Rectorate¡¯s Blog: Universities need to do more to help refugees. Here at UiO, we are now ready to welcome Palestinian research colleagues who are as yet unable to escape from Gaza. I want to see a stronger political will to make this happen,¡± says Rector Svein St?len.

• Helsam: Rosemarie de La Cruz Bernabe, Professor at UiO, recently took part in a roundtable discussion at the European Parliament on open science and academic freedom. The discussion focused on the ROSiE project¡¯s results and emphasised the need to establish guidelines and ethical governance in academic institutions in order to maintain integrity in open science.

• Uniforum/ Helsam: Ethics professor: Academic freedom is not an absolute principle.Jan Helge Solbakk is involved in a ¡°mega project¡± in which the University of Tel Aviv is a partner. He is now defending a differentiated form of academic boycott of Israel.

• UiO: We now have new web pages with information, procedures and guidelines linked to our international research and education collaborations.

• The Rectorate¡¯s Blog: We facilitate international research and educational cooperation.

• IMB: Two explosions will take place every day on the west side of Domus Medica through until 17 May inclusive. You can track the status of the construction works for the new University Hospital on IMB¡¯s web page for Information from the Norwegian Hospital Construction Agency. 

• UiO: Keep yourself updated on the study into the possibility of a merger between the Faculty of Dentistry and the Faculty of Medicine (link in Norwegian). Please contact the work group if you have any input. The next working group meeting takes place on 2 May.

• UiO: Discounts on theatre performances for UiO employees (link in Norwegian). You can currently access discounted tickets for three excellent shows.

Management meetings

• Lederforum: Overview of meeting dates. The next meeting takes place on Tuesday 14 May. Agenda items and documents may be submitted until 12:00 on the last Thursday before the meeting. Here are the minutes from the previous meeting.
• Overview of faculty board meetings and IDF meetings in 2024 (PDF) with deadlines for submitting cases. The next faculty board meeting will be held on 7 May. Agendas and protocols will be updated here.
• University Board meetings in 2024.The meetings are live streamed and open to anyone who would like to attend. The next meeting will take place on 14 May. See also agendas and minutes from the first meetings of the year.

Opportunities and deadlines

• Keep track of the annual cycle for award announcements. Several announcements have been published.

• Students can apply for up to NOK 25,000 in funding for innovation projects from the Students¡¯ Entrepreneurship Fund in Oslo (SEFiO).
  Closing date for applications: 7 May.

• Apply for internationalisation support from UiO:Life Science. Deadline 1 June.

• Apply for support for conferences and events from UiO:Life Science. Deadline 1 June.

Overview: Upcoming public defences

• 15 and 16 May at Blindern: The postdoctoral programme course in Research Management.
• 17 May Constitution Day breakfast for international faculty and staff on 17 May. The breakfast takes place from 10 to 11 AM at Professorboligen situated in the garden at the university's down town campus in a room called Stallen, just a stone throw away from the big children's parade. You will find a link to a map under the link below. The event costs NOK 160 and includes a selection of traditional Norwegian food and non-alcoholic beverage. We have 80 seats, and it is first-come-first-served.
• 17 May: The Committee for Social and Cultural Activities takes pleasure in inviting all members of staff at UiO to the wonderful University Garden at 17th of May at 11:00 AM.
• 22 and 24 May: Course in research data processing. Learn how to process research data in a lawful, structured and secure manner and how to store, reuse and understand research data in the future. Some courses are in Norwegian and some in English.
• 28 May: The Brain in the Centre: Screen (in Norwegian). How does screentime affect your brain? Does screen use cause you to gain or lose anything?
• 30 May: UiO:Life Science invites you to mark the end of the funding period for the second-generation convergence environment. The leaders of the interdisciplinary research groups will present what they have achieved and exchange experiences about what it is like to be part of a convergence environment. Everyone is welcome! Those people who are considering applying for the convergence environment are especially encouraged to attend. Mingling and tapas. NB: Requires registration.
• 5 June: The Brain in the Centre: Art (in Norwegian). The Faculty of Medicine invites you to attend the final session of the ¡°Brain in the Centre¡± series at the Auditorium. How does the brain process artistic stimuli? Experience the dissemination of research surrounded by Munch¡¯s paintings.
• 12-13 June: School of Health Innovation: Course for Professors and Managers open for registration. Learn how you can increase innovation in your laboratory and build bridges across the gap between researchers and health innovators. Register to attend the course in Copenhagen on 12-13 June. All expenses will be covered. First come, first served.
