Christmas Greetings from the Medicine Blog
In 2023, we had 21 posts on the Medicine Blog. These covered everything from small extracellular vesicles that kill cancer to cocaine use among adolescents. We have compiled the most read posts for you here as a small Christmas gift (in Norwegian). The posts were authored by Anne Marit Mengshoel, Anne Margrethe Myhre and Bj?rn Naume.
Lene Frost Andersen appointed new Head of the National Council for Nutrition
Head of Department and Professor Lene Frost Andersen has accepted the role as Head of the National Council for Nutrition for the 2024-2026 period. PhD candidate Erik Arnesen, Professor Rune Blomhoff and Professor Nanna Lien will also serve on the Council during this period.

Department of Biosciences: New course BIOS1010 - Introduction to Forensic Medicine
In spring 2024, the Department of Biosciences will offer a new, interdisciplinary bachelor course and admissions are now open. The course provides an introduction to forensic medicine, including forensic genetics, forensic pathology and forensic toxicology. Several lecturers from MED will contribute to the course.

Join the user panel: The Faculty is collaborating with the central UiO staff to establish a new database with an overview of funding opportunities. If you would like to join the user panel, please indicate your interest to the Unit for External Funding.- English titles for f?rsteamanuensis II, forsker I and professor II: From November this year, F?rsteamanuensis II is translated as Associate professor II, while Professor II will be the same in Norwegian and English. Forsker I will be translated as Senior Researcher, as previously.

Holidays, flexitime and working hours during the Christmas period. Did you know that, every year, the University of Oslo gives you and your colleagues the gift of an extra day off during Christmas?- UiO offers work experience to participants in the refugee induction programme (info in norwegian). The dedicated measures for Ukrainian researchers have now been expanded to include Palestinian researchers.
- UiO is one of nine partners in the Circle U university alliance. Six new Academic Chairs, including Christoph Gradmann (HELSAM), and an Academic Director have now been appointed. These are part-time posts with a special responsibility for promoting educational activities and offerings across universities. Read more about the Circle U appointments here.
- Each year, UIO creates an electronic Christmas card for employees to send to their friends and partners. Printed copies can be ordered from the Graphics Centre.
- External cultural activities for employees: Discounts on theatre performances and Christmas concerts are available to UiO employees.
- The new archive and case management system for the higher education sector has been delayed again. UiO expects to start using the system no earlier than the summer of 2025. Read more at Uniforum.

Leadership Forum: Overview of meeting dates. The next meeting is on Tuesday 23 January. Agenda items and documents may be submitted until 12:00 on the last Thursday before the meeting. Minutes of the previous meeting can be found here.

University Board meetings in 2024. The meetings are live-streamed and open to anyone who would like to attend. The next meeting takes place on 6 February.

- January 8-12: Digital Scholarship Days. For anyone keen to explore digital tools and methods, from programming and data management to open science. Workshops tailored for both newcomers and seasoned scholars, covering a wide range of digital scholarship techniques. Workshop registration is open.
- 11 January: Final seminar for the Rethinking Cancer Survivorship research project. Organised by Rethinking Cancer Survivorship (CANCUL) and the Society, Health and Power (SHEP) research group.

Medisinbloggen: What does an allergy test actually tell us? in Norwegian by Karin Cecilie L?drup Carlsen.
You have taken an allergy test and it comes back “positive”. Does this mean you are allergic? Do you need to avoid whatever triggered the test result?
IMB: Mouse brains studied to learn more about how we store information about objects (in Norwegian). How do we remember where objects are located? This has now been discovered in a project led by Koen Vervaeke. This knowledge may prove important to the treatment of diseases that affect memory, such as Alzheimer's disease.
Helsam: Environmental and climate change affects our health.
A new Norwegian network for Planetary Health will raise awareness of how environmental and climate changes affect both human and plant health.
Klinmed, IMB and OD: Interdisciplinary research on dementia at UiO. Dementia research at UiO includes studies of molecules, sleep, lactic acid and lifestyle. In this article, five researchers talk about their work.
IMB: The brains of small zooplankton can shed light on neurodegenerative diseases (link in Norwegian). Neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's disease affect, among other things, the human ability to move. Studying the control system for movement in the brains of small zooplankton can help generate knowledge of how diseases attack.
IMB: Updated atlas of rat brains marks milestone in brain research (link in Norwegian). A recently updated atlas of rat brains can now help science move forward. The Waxholm Space Rat Brain Atlas is a 3D-atlas that provides a detailed map of the rat brain. Researchers have now further developed the atlas through extensive updates and open access.
