Dear all staff,

The Faculty Board decided at its meeting on 10th December that all exams in the medical school will be assessed with pass/fail from autumn 2025, rather than graded assessments (A-F).

A similar decision was made at the University of Bergen this autumn, so from next autumn, this will be the practice at all four Norwegian medical schools.

The pass threshold will be raised

It was also decided that the pass threshold should be raised to 65%, and that students will receive more detailed feedback on their performance in the various subject areas covered by the exam.

Prior to the decision, a survey was conducted among medical students.

Out of 655 respondents, 66% of the students supported the transition to pass/fail assessment, 18% wanted to retain graded assessments, while the remaining had no preference.

Exams can become an even better tool with the change

The programme management will work with the exam commissions after the New Year to prepare for this transition. At the same time, we wish to use this change to make exams an even better tool for guiding students' learning by placing greater emphasis on key themes and understanding.

Best regards, Magnus
