Dear Colleague,

The Faculty of Medicine has a large PhD programme with around 200 defences annually and 1300-1400 candidates enrolled in the programme at any given time.

It is a demanding task for the faculty to manage the programme to the best of our candidates, and a considerable amount of effort is put in to achieve good results and have satisfied candidates and supervisors.

UiO sets the framework, the faculty can supplement the rules to meet our needs

UiO provides the framework for what a PhD degree should be at our university, but faculties are also given the opportunity to create supplementary rules on how the PhD programme should be managed within each faculty.

Therefore, the Faculty of Medicine has had its own supplementary rules for the programme for many years. The purpose of these rules is to provide more concrete regulations for admission, implementation and completion of the PhD work. The rules aim to ensure that the programme is of high quality and to secure predictability and equal treatment.

Many have requested changes to the supplementary rules

After the current dean's team started, we received several inputs from academic communities with suggestions for changes and adjustments to these rules.

Therefore, a working group with representatives from all three institutes has reviewed the entire regulation framework to identify needs for renewal, correct ambiguities, and propose new rules where necessary. The working group included:

  • Grete Dyb (Chair, Vice-Dean)
  • Hilde Lur?s (Director of Research Education KlinMed)
  • Johanna Henny Wagnerberger (PhD representative)
  • Merethe Bremer (Group Leader for Research Education)
  • K?re Olav Stensl?kken (Professor IMB)
  • Nina V?llestad (Professor HELSAM)
  •  Annetine Staff (Professor KlinMed)

Last date for feedback is 1th February

The dean's office seeks broad involvement in the process and the working group's proposals will be sent down the line to the institutes for internal hearing next week, with a deadline for feedback of 1th February 2025.

The institutes will relay the hearing to their academic groups. Additionally, the faculty will send all PhD candidates and academic staff an online form with questions related to the changes in the regulations. We hope for great engagement and look forward to receiving many good and constructive feedbacks on the proposals the group has developed.

The dean's office looks forward to launching the new regulations during spring 2025.

Best regards, Grete

In December, Johanna Wagnerberger was thanked as the leader of MedDocs. Vice-Dean Grete Dyb thanked Johanna for her excellent work as the representative for the PhD candidates at MED:

"We have greatly appreciated her insight and significant contributions in discussions and plans for the programme. Johanna has been an active participant in several working groups over the last two years, both in planning a training programme for supervisors and in improving our regulations. We wish Johanna the best of luck in the final stages of her doctoral work!"
