Dear esteemed colleagues,

Autumn is always a busy time, and it is no different at the Faculty of Medicine.

Opening of new buildings

Both the new building at Radiumhospitalet (link in Norwegian) and the UiO building at Gaustad (link in Norwegian) with the Medical Library and Skills Centre for our students, have been opened in the past few weeks. We are very pleased that the university is clearly present in these new and impressive spaces. This will benefit both students and staff, both at the hospital and the university.

See the image carousel below for pictures from the openings and several events from the past few weeks.

Grand Award Ceremonies

Ceremonies As dean, it is also a pleasure and honour to participate in various events that celebrate our outstanding professionals.

Norway’s first female professor of medicine, Professor Emeritus Kirsten Kjelsberg Osen at the Institute of Basic Medical Sciences, was knighted by the Order of St. Olav on October 25th. Kirsten Osen is appointed Knight for her contribution to medical research. It was a wonderful celebration of a lifelong dedication to medical education and research by a pioneer who is a role model for us all.

On October 29th, the Blix Family Fund awarded Peder Langeland Myhre, Klinmed, and Marieke Kuijjer, NCMM, each with a significant prize for their outstanding research on cardiovascular diseases and cancer, respectively. Langeland's work enhances understanding of heart failure and how to optimise treatment. Kuijjer is a pioneer in developing computational methods to model gene regulatory networks in individual patients.

We congratulate them and wish them continued success in their research!

Visits from Ukraine and Gaza

In the past few weeks, we have also had significant encounters with students and colleagues affected by war.

Three of our medical exchange students from Gaza recently participated in a panel discussion at the faculty, together with the international representative from the Norwegian Medical Students' Association and our Professor Anne Kveim Lie. And last week, UiO hosted a delegation from Lviv University in Ukraine, and opportunities for collaboration in education and research were discussed. Read more in Uniforum: "Vice-Rector at Lviv University: – We hear the air raid alarm every day."

Elections

Elections are an important part of university democracy. I greatly appreciate my job as dean and the trust shown to me and the current deanship in the last dean election. We are well underway in the work rooted in the faculty’s new strategy and annual plans, in close collaboration with you.

After careful consideration, I have now decided to run for rector in Spring 2025. For your information: should my team win the election (announcement on April 4th), there will be a new election at the Faculty of Medicine after Easter. This will be for the remaining dean period of 1 ? years, commencing on August 1st. I am confident that the Faculty of Medicine will continue to be well led regardless.

It is known that at least one more team in the upcoming rector election has a team member from our faculty. I will not discuss the rector election further in this newsletter and refer to other forums for discussions and campaigning.

I wish you all a continued pleasant autumn!

Best regards, Hanne
