Applying for internal and external funding at SMN

These procedures applies for all applications related to external and internal research funding at the Centre for Materials Science and Nanotechnology (SMN) regardless of which funding agency you are applying to. This includes RCN, EU, UiO calls for proposals and other funding sources.

Four important things to remember for all potential applicants

1. Clarification with your section leader

If you are a researcher, doctoral research fellow or postdoctoral research fellow, a rough draft of the application must be presented to the research group leader: Need for resources, main goal for the project etc.

2. Budgeting

All projects needs a thorough budget. Download our budget-starter to get an overview of all the information you have at this point and what you need to find out. Fill out as much as you can and contact the research adviser for your group. The information you have gathered in the budget-starter helps the research adviser get started.

3. Research infrastructure

For applications where the use of research infrastructure is needed (both local infrastructure and getting access to infrastructure at other units), please contact the research adviser who know what prices to use and how to budget these things.

4. Approval from the Centre Management

All applications including the budget must be approved by the Centre Management before the application is submitted. If there is a need for clarification related to the Centre's own contribution etc, the project leader needs to contact the Centre Management (via the research adviser or directly to the Head of SMN) well ahead of the deadline. If needed, we schedule meetings between the project leader and Centre Management to clarify these matters.

The Centre aims at getting in touch with all applicants at an early stage in the application process, so that we can work together to create the best possible application to secure the highest possible success rate for the outcome.

Please note that the Centre Management may withdraw applications that have been submitted in without an approval.

Deadlines for all applications

  • No later than three weeks before the submission deadline - Deadline for contacting the research adviser and starting to work on the budget.
  • One week before the submission deadline - deadline for submitting the application for administrative approval. This means that the budget including own financing needs to be finalised.
  • Two days before the submission deadline - deadline for the Centre Management to make the administrative approval.
