About the artists

Bixiga 70 is today regarded as one of Brazil’s most distinctive instrumental bands – known for its unique blend of afrobeat, Brazilian rhythms, jazz, funk and Latin. Since forming in S?o Paulo in 2010, the collective has built a reputation for energetic and precise live performances, driven by a massive horn section, intricate layers of percussion and a pulsating groove.

The band takes its name from the Bixiga neighbourhood and the address of the studio where it all began, Estúdio Traquitana, on Rua Treze de Maio 70. The legacy of S?o Paulo’s diverse music scene is clearly present in their sound, while the references to West African music are also strong – something many critics often highlight. The international press has described them as one of the most solid Afro-Brazilian orchestras of their generation.
