About the papyrus collection

The papyrus collection at the University of Oslo Library was initiated by Professor Samson Eitrem, who travelled to Egypt in 1910 and purchased a number of papyrus fragments with his own funds. These were later donated to the Library. All the papyri were found in Egypt, and most are written in Greek. The University of Oslo’s papyrus collection cannot compare in size or significance with the major collections in Europe or the United States, but it is the largest collection of Greek papyri in the Nordic countries and contains many interesting pieces.

The papyrus collection is a research collection and is therefore not generally open to the public. This tour provides a rare opportunity to see the papyri.
