Tripartite cooperation and co-determination
Tripartite cooperation and co-determination are fundamental pillars of the Norwegian work model. Cooperation between the trade unions, the employees associations and the government, in addition to the short distance and dialogue between employers and employees, has long traditions in Norway. Employees and their representatives have the right to be involved and contribute in a wide range of processes and decision-making at their workplace, from decisions concerning the work environment, to salary determination, to the development of strategies and objectives. Tripartite cooperation and co-determination is highly valued, and also a prerequisite for the Norwegian work model to function.
How the three parties are to cooperate, is regulated by a set of laws, including the Working Environment Act, and the Basic collective agreement for the Civil Service.
