Finalising permit for non-EU/EEA nationals

If you are a non-EU/EEA national and your intended stay in Norway is more than 90 days, you need to finalise the permit application process initiated online abroad  through a personal meeting with the immigration authorities upon arrival.

NB! There can be long waiting times to book an appointment with the police. Therefore, you are allowed to start working if you have been granted the residence permit and have booked an appointment with the police. This will not have any consequences for you.

If it is impossible to book an appointment with the police, you must contact UDI by phone or email to report that you are in Norway and starting to work. You must still meet with the police to order a residence card as soon as possible.

Appointment at the Service Center for Foreign Workers

If you have followed the instructions outlined in visa & permits you should, when arriving in Norway, have an appointment at the Service Center for Foreign Workers (sua.no). Follow these steps:

  • Meet on time for this appointment and bring with you:
    1. Your passport.
    2. A property purchase or rental contract. Preferably one valid for at least 6 months.
If the rental contract is older than 3 months, you must also bring confirmation from the owner that the contract is still valid.
    3. If employed by the university your employment contract with UiO.
If the contract is older than 3 months, bring confirmation from your local personnel officer that the contract is still valid.
    4. All the originals of your application for a residence permit. It is not common that you will have to show these papers, but you are required to bring them in case the police would like to conduct a random verification.
  • At the Service Center wait for the police to call up your name. The police will check your ID and take your picture and finger prints for the residence card. They should also hand you information on how to become an electronic user to order the tax deduction card if applicable.
