How can Norway and the EU achieve Sustainable Competitiveness in a Geopolitically Transforming World?

The world is undergoing dramatic political, economic, and technological changes at the same time that climate change threatens long-term human and ecological well-being.

As global competition intensifies, especially between China and the United States, long-held diplomatic norms and understandings are being challenged, geopolitical landscapes are being transformed, political polarisation is intensifying, and alliances are being put under strain.

What does this mean for the future of Norway and Europe? What does it mean for global efforts to address climate change and our climate neutrality goals?

Amidst all of these developments, how can Norway and Europe achieve sustainable economic growth, further develop our renewable energy systems, and provide a degree of job security for workers? How do we ensure a fair low-carbon energy transition while remaining competitive on the global stage?

As described in the recent Draghi report, Europe and Norway is facing “an existential challenge”. We risk falling behind China and the United States if we fail to adapt. Europe and Norway must confront the realities of China’s growing dominance in global clean energy and digital technologies and the rapidly unfolding “command capitalism” that the Trump administration is introducing in the United States.

How should we react? What role should public investment and state involvement play in decisions regarding the direction of economic development? What industries will define our future, and how do we ensure our work forces remain relevant in this rapidly changing landscape?

What can be done to create productive and environmentally responsible business conditions which ensure fair competition, safeguard economic security, and continue to move us in environmentally sustainable directions?

Through this event we aim to explore these and other key questions in conversation with the public.
