ARENA Centre for European Studies welcome all to its traditional ARENA lecture.
The EU is faced with new security threats and changes to the geopolitical landscape and international order. How is the EU dealing with these challenges?
Federica Mogherini is rector of the College of Europe in Bruges, but has previously served as the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission.
During her term in the EU, from 2014 to 2019, Europe was faced with Russia’s annexation of Crimea, Brexit, the Syrian war and refugee crisis, and Donald Trump’s first term as president of the US. What has changed from then to now with Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine and Trump’s second term in office?
Drawing on experiences from her term in the EU, Federica Mogherini will give her view on the EU’s role in the changing world. Is the EU equipped to deal with the security challenges it faces?
And how do we educate a new generation of politicians, civil servants, scholars and citizens to face the challenges ahead?
The lecture will be followed by a discussion with:

About the lecturer
Federica Mogherini is Rector of College of Europe in Bruges and Director of the European Union Diplomatic Academy. From 2014 to 2019 she served as the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission. Prior to that, she was Italian Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.
