Literature and democracy, then and now

How may we understand literature, citizenship and democracy in a historical and contemporary perspective?

This panel discussion takes as its starting point the book Literary Citizenship in Scandinavia in the Long Eighteenth Century (Boydell & Brewer 2023) in a debate on how we can understand literature, citizenship, and democracy today.
 

Participants:

  • Cathrine Holst, Professor in Philosophy of Science and Democracy, University of Oslo.
  • Ellen Krefting, Professor in History of Ideas, University of Oslo.
  • James Raven, Emeritus Professor of Modern History, University of Essex and Fellow of Magdalene College, University of Cambridge.

The panel discussion will be introduced by Aina N?ding, Research Librarian, National Library of Norway, and led by Kjell Lars Berge, Professor in Rhetoric, Language and Communication, University of Oslo.

The book is a result of the research project Literary Citizens of the World (2016–2021), hosted by the National Library of Norway and financed by the Research Council of Norway.

The event will be in English and is organized by the research group Voicing Democracy, financed by UiO:Democracy.
