UiO students are thriving

Recent results from a national study survey show that students at the University of Oslo (UiO) are highly satisfied with their study programmes. Students are spending more time on organised learning activities and are largely present on campus.

The results from the student survey “Studiebarometeret 2025” show that overall student satisfaction at UiO is 4.1 out of 5 points, above the national average. Results in most main areas have remained stable in recent years.

UiO students meet in person

Despite fewer students being on campus every day, in-person teaching remains strong at UiO. 85 per cent of students recieve regular face-to-face teaching, which is 12 percentage points above the national average. More than 9 out of 10 students are on campus every week, and 1 in 3 is on campus every day.

Changed use of artificial intelligence

The use of generative AI in study work continues to increase, and it appears that UiO students have become more conscious of how they use these tools. Although more students use AI, the proportion who use it to generate text has declined significantly.

AI tools are now used more as support, such as to:

  • get explanations of difficult topics and concepts (71%)
  • summarise existing texts and articles (58%)
  • quality assure and edit their own writing (57%)
  • act as a discussion partner and support for idea development (54%)

More organised activities

The survey shows a shift in how students allocate their time. UiO students now spend more time in organised learning activities (11.5 hours per week) than the year before. At the same time, time spent on independent study has decreased slightly, to 19.3 hours per week.

Another trend is that students spend a bit more time on paid work alongside their studies (10 hours per week), which is lower than the national average.

High expectations and a good learning environment

UiO students give particularly positive feedback about the University Library. They also feel that the teaching covers the curriculum well. Academic staff are also praised for having high academic ambitions on behalf of the students.

Although there is a slight increase from last year, UiO students score lower than the national average on questions about contact with the working world.

About Studiebarometeret

Studiebarometeret, the university and university college student survey, is conducted annually among second and fifth year students at Norwegian universities and university colleges.

The 2025 survey was conducted in the autumn and sent to approximately 73,000 students nationwide. At UiO, the response rate was 29 per cent.
