Language Policy at UiO

UiO is in the process of revising our language policy. The Norwegian language requirements for foreign scientific staff is under scrutiny. Is it simply fair to expect that all scientific staff can contribute in Norwegian or is such a requirement in the way of research excellence?

The University of Oslo is about to develop its language policy, and we would like to discuss several aspects of this policy. Today foreign scientific staff are required to learn Norwegian within two years. Is this too strict? Is it too much to demand from scientists publishing in English and aiming for international research excellence? Or is it simply fair to ensure Norwegian in research and teaching?

We welcome the debate!
