Social media: Account guidelines

Common guidelines for names, profile images and banner images for all official UiO social media accounts.

Naming of accounts

The conventions for naming social media accounts are based on the established brand hierarchy from uio.no, with some adjustments for channels that put limitations on the number of characters. A clear set of naming conventions ensures consistent communication across all accounts. Additionally, they create a recognisable orthographic pattern across all channels.

Limits on characters

Some channels put a limit on the number of characters in a title. Per 5 April 2022, the names of Facebook pages, Twitter accounts and YouTube channels may not exceed 50 characters. The names of Instagram accounts and Snapchat accounts may not exceed 30 characters.

In cases where the brand hierarchy yields names that exceed the maximum length for a given channel, local adjustments must be made. Contact the social media manager at the Department of Communications and External Relations to develop a suitable name.

Profile picture

All official accounts affiliated with and run by UiO, for instance accounts for faculties and institutes, must use the red seal as profile image. This applies to all social media channels.

Note that the use of the red seal is restricted to social media. Furthermore, it can only be used by official UiO accounts.

Banner image

Banner images in social media should be in line with The University of Oslo's photo brief. This way we ensure a consistent and recognisable photo style across channels and throughout the organisation.

The banner images should reflect the images that are used on the unit's website at uio.no, and they must be in the correct format. If the format is unusual, try to select a section of the image that works well for the channel in question, so the most important part of the image is displayed. Use horizontal images, center the motif as much as possible and avoid images that do not have a clear focal point.
